Adaptiva Named Finalist for the 2012 Red Herring Top 100 Americas Award

Finalists Cited as the Year’s Most Promising Private Technology Ventures in North America

We are thrilled to have been selected as a Finalist for Red Herring’s Top 100 Americas award, a prestigious list honoring the year’s most promising private technology ventures from the North American business region. Finalists will present their winning strategies at the Red Herring Americas Forum in Santa Monica, California on May 21-23, 2012. The Top 100 winners will be announced on May 23 during a special awards ceremony.

The Red Herring editorial team selected the most innovative companies from a pool of hundreds from across North America. The nominees are evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy and integration into their respective industries.

This unique assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the actual track record and standing of a company, which allows Red Herring to see past “buzz” and make the list a valuable instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry. The complete list of Finalists can be found at: http://www.redherring.com/americas-2012-finalists/.

“This year was very rewarding,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and chairman of Red Herring. “There are so many great companies producing truly innovative and amazing products and technologies. We had a very difficult time narrowing the field and selecting the Finalists from such a group of future stars. Adaptiva shows great promise, therefore deserves to be on the short list. Now we are faced with the difficult task of selecting the Top 100 winners.”

OneSite Content Pre-Staging in ConfigMgr ([not] SCCM)

What is content in ConfigMgr?

Content in ConfigMgr is always in the form of a package defined by a designated set of source files; these source files are then made available to the clients using distribution points in ConfigMgr or peer systems once you deploy OneSite. For ConfigMgr, consumers of content include the following:

Consumer 2007 Action Item
Software Distribution Program Advertisement
Software Updates Update Deployment
Operating System Deployment Task Sequence Advertisement

Although things have been renamed slightly and are stored using a single instance store, the above list is still valid for ConfigMgr 2012 with one addition: Applications. Also, all action items in 2012 are called deployments.

What is content pre-staging?

It is the process of distributing content to each system that requires the content before the system actually requires the content. This ensures that the content is actually available when the local system kicks off an action that needs the content instead of having to download it on demand. This content download can fail for any number of reasons including (but not limited to):

  • The DP is offline
  • The client is not on the network
  • The client does not have a reliable connection to the DP
  • The DP is over-loaded
  • The content or hash value do not match resulting in a content hash mismatch error

Failed content retrieval is the source of a large number of failures in ConfigMgr but is difficult to track or prevent.

imageIn ConfigMgr, for mandatory/required (download and execute) advertisements and deployments (all update deployments are download and execute), clients will attempt to download content at the “Start Time” of the advertisement or deployment so that it is pre-staged and ready for the actual scheduled mandatory time or deadline in the case of update deployments.

This works reasonably well, but there is no guarantee or tracking of this process. You essentially just have to make your “Start Time” far enough in advance of your mandatory/deadline time based on the size of the content and hope that the content is delivered everywhere. There are a handful of “tricks” that you can use to help this process along, but they all involve extra work outside of the intended functionality, don’t really address the issue, and still leave you not knowing who has actually downloaded the required content.

Enter stage right: Adaptiva OneSite.

At it’s core, OneSite completely replaces the content distribution system in ConfigMgr making it entirely Peer to Peer (P2P) based. This content distribution system is highly capable and everything it does is 100% tracked so that you always know who downloaded content, when they downloaded it, and who they downloaded it from. You can even see how much of the content they’ve downloaded if they are still in the process of downloading it.

Typically, OneSite just responds to the ConfigMgr agent’s request for content making it seamless and completely transparent to normal ConfigMgr operation; users and administrators alike will never even know this is happening. OneSite also has the ability to explicitly pre-stage ConfigMgr content without any involvement from ConfigMgr itself. This combined with the rich reporting in OneSite gives you reliable and accountable content pre-staging.

Content pre-staging in OneSite comes in the form of a Content Push Policy that combines the following items and parameters:

  • What: Any (and all) ConfigMgr content (including Applications in ConfigMgr 2012)
  • Where: Any designated ConfigMgr collections including multiple collections
  • When: Any scheduled time including multiple schedules and recurring schedules
  • How: Content push in OneSite is also “prioritizable” enabling you to set different priorities for different content

Content pre-staging with OneSite is quick and easy: it’s just a matter of a few drags and drops and then viewing a report to track and verify the progress. What this all adds up to is a complete solution for managing and distributing your ConfigMgr content that is perfectly integrated into ConfigMgr while also adding valuable capabilities.

Cargill Selects Adaptiva OneSite to Simplify IT Operations

Cargill to Deploy Adaptiva to Better Leverage Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, Improve IT Efficiencies and Lower Cost

Adaptiva is pleased to announce an agreement with Cargill, Inc. to deploy Adaptiva OneSite TM throughout the Cargill environment. Cargill, a global producer and distributor of food, financial, agricultural and industrial products and services, will implement Adaptiva OneSite to extend the capabilities of Microsoft Corporation’s System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, essentially eliminate server infrastructure, streamline IT operations and improve return on investment on existing systems. The announcement was made during the Microsoft Management Summit 2012 in Las Vegas.

“Delivering software and IT services in 66 countries is a major challenge and priority for Cargill. Adaptiva OneSite’s scalable peer-to-peer architecture will allow us to provide these services to our worldwide network using just a handful of servers for our Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012 infrastructure,” said Chad Mead, vice president of Global Service Operations. “Adaptiva will help us reduce the need for or eliminate hundreds of servers and create a dynamic systems management environment that can rapidly move content across our network to manage our client devices anytime, anywhere.”

Cargill selected Adaptiva OneSite for its ability to rapidly deploy and scale to accommodate the Cargill environment. Flexible and easy to use, Adaptiva OneSite optimizes the flow of inventory and policy traffic, in addition to software, patches and operating system images. Adaptiva OneSite creates a virtual SAN in every network location and connects them using a sophisticated bandwidth harvesting algorithm. These capabilities are deeply connected with System Center Configuration Manager 2012, allowing complex enterprise environments like Cargill’s to be managed using a single Configuration Manager site, rather than hundreds of sites.

“Adaptiva OneSite is the result of a strong, ongoing relationship between Microsoft and Adaptiva. We are pleased that Adaptiva is providing Cargill with a solution that will enhance System Center Configuration Manager 2012,” said Sergio Klarreich, director of Strategic Alliances, Management and Security Division, Microsoft Corp. “Adaptiva offers solutions that extend the power of System Center Configuration Manager, simplify the complexity of IT operations and reduce the total cost of IT ownership. Adaptiva is a great complement to System Center Configuration Manager.”

“Cargill’s goals have broad synergy with Adaptiva’s mission to reduce IT complexity. Adaptiva is pleased to expand our partnership with Cargill to simplify IT operations and lower operating costs, while increasing their level of service and content distribution,” said Todd Floyd, vice president of worldwide sales and operations at Adaptiva.  “Cargill is a vital part of the world’s agricultural infrastructure. It is a great pleasure for us to help them reduce costs while creating a robust, self-configuring and self-healing IT infrastructure.”

This announcement is on the heels of Adaptiva’s release of its latest software suite at the Microsoft Management Summit 2012 in Las Vegas. This new version contains key customer-driven product enhancements, unique features and functionality to further streamline IT operations and seamlessly integrates with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2012. Adaptiva software streamlines IT operations, extends the functionality of Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012 and rapidly improves return on investment on existing systems.  The software suite is currently available for demonstration at booth #415 during the Microsoft Management Summit 2012 at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Adaptiva is also raffling a Harley-Davidson motorcycle during the show.
